In our view the area around Kirkby Stephen is an excellent training ground for those wishing to learn new hill-walking skills or hone their existing ones. The hills are remote enough to offer plenty of challenges but not as demanding as those found in areas of Scotland or Wales. You can also keep well out of the way of the usual tourism trails. To make the most of this terrain you might consider joining one of the training courses run by Kirkby Mountain Rescue Team. These short courses focus on basic hill walking and navigation skills and provide you with a good grounding for undertaking your own expeditions into the hills or for further more advanced training. The courses are run by qualified Mountain Leaders who are members of the Mountain Rescue team, assisted by other members of the team. You will benefit from a wealth of experience and deep knowledge of the subject. You can also take pleasure from the fact that all of fees you pay for the course go to the team's funds. Keep an eye on the website for course dates. They are listed under Events. There are lots of places to stay in and around Kirkby Stephen, from posh hotels and guesthouses to simple hostels.
