Incidents 2013

(Note: incidents given with a number in brackets are officially reportable, while the others relate to standbys, event cover and incidents outside the team area at which team members were present)

(31) 14th December
11 members responded to assist Kendal MRT recover a 50 year old lady who had fallen and injured her ankle at Pickering Gill near Cautley Spout on the borders of the Howgill Fells. Her companions were guided off while the lady was recovered to safety by Kendal’s stretcher in very windy and wet weather.

(30) 15th September, 3 hrs
13 members responded to a call from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) to assist an ambulance stuck on a slippery farm track in the valley of Mallerstang just south of Kirkby Stephen. Its crew was attending an elderly man who had become ill. They released the ambulance and assisted the crew with their casualty.

7th September
Honister GNAA3 members of the team assisted a critically injured male cyclist at Honister Pass, providing life-sustaining care for over 30 minutes while waiting for an ambulance. The cyclist was fortunate that two of the team members witnessed the accident and were able to provide immediate care. The casualty was taken to hospital in Preston by the Great North Air Ambulance.

August Event Cover
During August team members provided 1st Aid cover for a number of local events:

(29) 25th August, 30 mins
3 members on first aid cover for Brough Coloured Horse Show were called to a man in his 60's who suffered a diabetic collapse. After treatment he made a full recovery.

(28) 14th August, 1.25hrs
The team was called by Penrith MRT towards 8pm as 24 members were taking part in an evening traning sesioon. 21 members responded to assist in the search for a missing male walker overdue at Mardale head, Haweswater, on the Coast to Coast path. He turned up well off his intended route as the team appraoched the search rendezvous at Mardale Head.

(27) 12th August, 3 hrs
6 members responded to a call at 9am to assist Penrith MRT search for a 78 year old man missing from home at Wetheral near Carlisle. The man returned safely home having been missing since Saturday as the team made its way through the village.

(26) 5th August, 1.5 hrs
The team were called by Kendal MRT just after 6am to assist with the search for a woman missing overnight near the village of Brigsteer near Kendal. 14 members responded and were en-route when the woman was located.

25th July
Two team members drew upon their MR skills to assist the emergency services and Keswick MRT at Thirlmere Reservoir. A man, believed to have been overcome by the intensely cold water, drowned while swimming on this hot summer day.

(25) 14th July, 25 mins
While returning from incident 24 the team came across a 60 year old lady who had fallen from her bicycle onto the grass roadside verge. She was examined and injuries to her knee and elbow were treated.

(24) 14th July, 30 mins
The team provided first aid cover for Appleby Carnival football competition. One youngster was treated for a soft tissue injury to his ankle and another for abrasions and grazing to his knee.

(23) 26th June, 6hrs 40mins
16 members responded to assist Penrtith MRT search for a 12 year old boy missing from home near the village of Armathwaite on the banks of the Eden near Penrith. Police and members of Patterdale MRT and Lakes Mountain Search Dogs also attended. Though the day was sunny and pleasant most of the area was mature woodland making search conditions difficult. The missing boy was located safe and well near his home.

(22) 19th June, 30 mins
14 members responded to a call from North-West Ambulance Service as back-up for the air ambulance. It was attending to assist a male hang glider with a possible head injury flying from Tailbridge Hill, a popular site on the fells above Kirkby Stephen. The air ambulance was able to deal with the incident and the team stood down on the point of deployment.

(21) 14th June, 2.5 hrs
13 members responded to a call for assistance from Penrith MRT just after 4pm. They assisted with the stretcher evacuation of a woman who had injured her ankle on the rocky path above the head of the the Haweswater reservoir. She was with a group walking the Coast to Coast path.

GNAA Howgills(20) 9th June, 2hrs 15 mins
13 members responded to assist a male trainee paraglider near Green Bell in the Howgill Fells. He had landed heavily and injured his back. The air ambulance attended and their paramedics tended to the casualty before air-lifting him to hospital.

(19) 2nd June, 1hr
Male participant running the 23 mile course of the Yomp Mountain Challenge injured the cruciate ligament of his right knee near Nine Standards Rigg checkpoint. 7 members of the team assisted with first aid/splinting and evacuated him to the base by quad bike and Land Rover.

(18) 2nd June, 15 mins
Female participant walking the 23 mile course of the Yomp Mountain Challenge became unwell and after seeking assistance from team members retired at the Aisgill checkpoint. 3 of 5 MRT members on site were Penrith members on a goodwill visit.

(17) April 26th, 1.5 hrs
A team member was asked by his neighbour, a farmer, for assistance in recovering a cragfast sheep and lamb stuck on Windmore End crags above Brough. 5 members responded and sheep and lamb were safely retrieved.

Caultey Spout(16) April 9th, 2hrs 45 mins.
The team was called to a woman and her three teenage children 'cragfast' on the steep footpath beside Cautley Spout waterfall, at an altitude of 300m. The family were reassured and were walked off to their car at the Cross Keys with the aid of some confidence ropes.

(15) March 27th, 1 hr.
3 members assisted a fishmonger's van stuck in a snowdrift on the Tommy Road. Towed clear by the team Land Rover and sent safely on its way.

MR in blizzard(14) March 24th, 45 mins.
Recovered two female occupants from broken-down car on snow blocked B6270 road at Tailbridge Hill. 6 team members.

(13) March 23rd, 45mins.
Called to assist 1 snowbound vehicle and recover occupants to safety on B6259 south of Nateby. 6 team members.

(12) March 23rd, 2hrs.
Called to assist 1 snowbound vehicle and recover occupants to safety on minor road crossroads near Brough Sowerby. 9 team members.
 
(11) March 23rd, 30 mins.
Called to assist 1 snowbound vehicle and recover occupants to safety on minor road near Brough Sowerby. 2 team members.
 
(10) March 23rd, 3 hrs 15 mins.
Called to assist 5 snowbound vehicles and recover occupants to safety on B6276 at Brough - Middleton road. 10 team members.
 
(9) March 23rd, 40 mins.
Called to assist 2 snowbound vehicles and recover occupants to safety on B6276 at Brough - Middleton road. 6 team members.
 
(8) March 23rd, 20 mins.
Called to assist 1 snowbound vehicle and recover occupants to safety on Tommy Road south of Kirkby Stephen. 5 team members.

(7) March 23rd, 30 mins.
Called to assist 3 snowbound vehicles and recover occupants to safety on B6276 at Brough - Middleton road. 3 team members.
 
(6) March 23rd, 2 hrs.
Called to assist 2 snowbound vehicles and recover occupants to safety on B6259 at Outhgill. 12 team members.
 
(5) March 23rd, 4 hours.
Called to assist 3 snowbound vehicles and recover occupants to safety on B6270 at Tailbridge Hill. 15 team members.

March 23rd, 1.5 hrs.
Standby to assist Teesdale team recover snowbound vehicle and 6 occupants on B6276 road.

March 23rd, 20 mins.
Requested by Police to assist family without food in snowbound holiday chalet. Put in contact with neighbouring farms.

Tailbridge snowbound(4) March 18th, 3 hrs.
Called to assist 8 snowbound vehicles and recover occupants to safety on B6270 at Tailbridge Hill. An army lorry had skidded and was blocking the road, with another lorry, a Land Rover and 5 vehicles trapped behind. 17 team members helped to recover all the vehicles, with a snow plough and JCB digger.

(3) February 23rd
Two members assisted a 10 yr old girl with a knee injury during the High Cup Fell Race near Dufton.

February 16th
Standby for possible ambulance assist for lady fallen in Dufton Gill. Sorted by Penrith MRT.

February 13th
Standby for possible ambulance assist in snow at Martinagap Farm, Orton

(2) January 26th
Assistance given to motorist stuck in snow near Barras.

(1) January 25th, 1.5 hrs
The team was called to assist an ambulance stuck on Midland Hill on its way to a reported 6 vehicle road traffic collision. A crew set off checked the route along the A685 as far as Newbiggin on Lune. The ambulance managed to self extract.
